There are two kinds of music: good music, and the other kind

“There are two kinds of music: good music, and the other kind.” – Duke Ellington.

The Rehearsal Orchestra’s 2025 season offers players a broad palette, mixing the old with the new and the known with the unknown, while striving to steer clear of ‘the other kind’. The season is bookended by symphonies: Mahler’s ever-popular Titan balanced with the Symphony by Leokadiya Kashperova – long known (if at all) as Stravinsky’s piano teacher, her grandest work is rich, romantic, uplifting and well worth discovering. Our other three weekend courses offer complementary pairings: Britten with his long-term assistant Imogen Holst, whose compositions were little known in her lifetime; city portraits by Gershwin and Ellington showing contrasting aspects of jazz; and, for our Manchester course, a celebration of the niche genre ‘symphonic dance’.
