Remembering RO President Sir Andrew Davis CBE, 1944–2024

Saturday, April 27, 2024

Last weekend, just as we were getting stuck into Also sprach Zarathustra in Manchester, we were greatly saddened to learn of the death of RO President Sir Andrew Davis CBE in Chicago, aged 80.

A much-loved conductor, Sir Andrew's remarkable career – both in the concert hall and at the opera – spanned more than half a century, across continents and a vast range of repertoire.

Keenly appreciative of the Rehearsal Orchestra's aims, Sir Andrew conducted the orchestra in its 50th anniversary year. RO Artistic Director Levon Parikian writes:

“In 2007 Andrew Davis came to conduct Beethoven and Stravinsky with the Rehearsal Orchestra. He’d just got off a plane from New York, but showed no signs of tiredness as he conducted the orchestra with the zest and twinkle for which he was rightly known. Most of all, he understood what the orchestra was about, and drove the players beyond what they thought they could do, drawing the best out of the group with a mixture of charm, kindness and a hint of inner steel. A memorable occasion.”

We send our deepest sympathies and condolences to Sir Andrew's family and friends.
